Why EQ? Research on the benefits of emotional intelligence for students & faculty

What is SEL? Overview of social emotional learning, the process for building & practicing EQ skills

How does SEL work? 12 micro-cases show how higher ed institutions are implementing social emotional learning today.

The micro-cases each describe a real-world experiment-in-progress where an individual professor, department, or whole institution is leveraging emotional intelligence tools & methods to increase collaboration, thriving, resilience, problem-solving, empathy, and other key attributes for future-ready institutions.

Why? Today, only 58% of students graduate from 4-year BA programs in even 6 years and only 29% of first-time students in two-year associate or certificate programs graduate in 3 years. While there are many factors that contribute to this decrease in student performance and success, a growing body of research indicates that emotional intelligence (EQ) may be a missing ingredient that could help turn the situation around.

As Randy Swing, former Executive Director of the American Institutes of Research, said, “I’m convinced that EQ skills can be taught and that those skills undergird academic confidence, study skills, and the key elements that contribute to student success in college.”

The micro-cases come from members of the Six Seconds EQ Network. We’re a global not-for-profit community, working toward a billion people practicing emotional intelligence.

Six Seconds is one of the original pioneers of emotional intelligence. In 1967, our team began learning how to integrate emotional and intellectual development; in 1978 our Self-Science curriculum was published. In 1995, Daniel Goleman wrote about Self-Science as a model process for teaching emotional intelligence. We were founded in 1997 to share this methodology, and now we have certified practitioners working in over 125 countries.
