 Masters in Educational Leadership
In collaboration with the Summer Principals Academy (SPA) at Columbia Teachers College, Six Seconds provides emotional intelligence training to aspiring principals. The “EQ for Educational Leadership” course, together with a daily mindfulness program, are integral to building self-awareness and emotional skills as foundations for effective leadership. SPA is a transformative graduate program committed to developing school leaders and promoting equity and excellence in education through an enriching, hands-on curriculum and administrative internships. It’s a cohort-based program that runs in New York and New Orleans.
Professional Development Institute
In addition, in collaboration with the Summer Principals Academy and the Urban Education Leaders Collaborative at Teachers College, Columbia University and Six Seconds offer The EQ Educator Institute. The institute equips educators with the confidence to develop and implement SEL lessons and activities, effectively communicate the value of SEL to parents, other educators, and school leaders, use evidence-based assessment tools, and apply benchmarks for SEL implementation. Using the Six Second Model of Emotional Intelligence, this course equips educators to be more effective in teaching, modeling, and integrating these elements of Social Emotional Learning by starting with the essential foundation: our own EQ growth as educators.
A growing body of research demonstrates that a systemic, capacity-building, and culturally responsive approach to social emotional learning helps students increase academic achievement and do better in life. Teachers who include SEL in their classrooms report a more effective learning environment, better problem-solving skills, and stronger interpersonal connections – and they end up having more time to pursue their instructional goals.
About Columbia Teachers College
Columbia Teachers College is the first and largest graduate school of education in the United States.
Teachers College was founded on the proposition that education alone can’t correct our society’s inequalities — that to maximize the life chances of all people, we must also support people’s physical and psychological wellbeing. Thus, fields such as education psychology, nursing education, nutrition education, special education, conflict resolution and spirituality and education were created at TC, and for more than a century they have prepared psychologists, nutritionists, health educators, speech pathologists and other professionals, as well as teachers and school leaders. Today, Columbia Teachers College continues to follow this multidisciplinary approach, and the The EQ Educator Institute is a natural fit to pursue TC’s goals of social justice and a holistic education for all students.
