EQ Matters in Schools

THE POWER OF SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING PROGRAMS
A study involving more than 200 school-based social and emotional learning programs (270,000 K-12 students) has found that Social and Emotional learning programs lead to a boost in student skills.  Where programs focus on recognizing and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining positive relationships, setting and achieving positive goals, making responsible decisions and constructively handling interpersonal situations, the following outcomes were recorded.
Significantly improved social and emotional skills, which included:
  • More caring attitudes
  • Positive social behaviors
  • Declines in disruptive behavior
  • Less emotional distress

This research showed that the results were effective for students of all ages and ethnic groups. More powerful results were noted in those programs that followed recommended practices for training school personnel to promote these skills in students!!!
